Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Pass pre-hire and random drug testing screens.
  • Complete state-required physical examination for bus drivers and Inoculation Certificate on file in the central office.
  • Pass random checks (KBI- DVM).
  • Valid Kansas CDL with required P- S and airbrake endorsements.
  • At least one year experience in driving some type of motor vehicle (which may be a private automobile)- including experience throughout each of the four seasons.
  • Desire to continue career improvement by enhanced skills and job performance.
  • Requires prolonged sitting.
  • Load and unload vehicle- making frequent stops (up to 100 per day).
  • Lifting- carrying- pushing- and/or pulling up to approximately 100 pounds with periodic lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires turning- and reaching.
  • Requires driving skills- including ability to operate vehicle at night.
  • Must work indoors and outdoors during the school year.
  • Must work in noisy- crowded- stressful environments- with numerous interruptions.
  • Must work in and around dust- fumes- and odors.
  • Climb in and out of bus up to 2-6 times per shift.
  • Drive in reverse 2% of the time- which requires twisting the upper body and neck while driving.
  • Adheres to all USD 409 policies and procedures.  

General Functions:

  • Provide clean- safe- and reliable transportation to ensure students benefit from district programs and activities.
  • Ensure all activities conform to state school transportation guidelines.
  • Communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and the community.  
  • React to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner- meeting deadlines as assigned.
  • Operate all vehicles and equipment as necessary.
  • Implement and follow the vision and mission of the district.
  • Participates in unit meetings- in-service training- safety workshops- etc. for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Willingness to submit to random drug screening. 
  • Regular attendance is required of all employees subject to allowed leave in accordance with district policy or negotiated agreement- as appropriate.  Excessive absences or tardiness- unauthorized leave or unexcused absences may result in disciplinary action including termination of employment.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Implement and follow all Kansas school transportation regulations.
  • Implement all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. fluid levels- fuel- tire pressure- exterior condition- etc.) according to procedure adopted by the Director of Transportation.
  • Drives school bus for the purpose of transporting passengers safely- over scheduled routes to and from school.
  • Advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing regulations and maintaining passenger safety.
  • Administers first aid and medical assistance for the purpose of providing immediate care for ill- medically fragile and/or injured children.
  • Reports observations and incidents (e.g. disciplinary- accidents- inappropriate social behavior- etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel. 
  • Keep to assigned schedule. Informs other school personnel- parents- students (e.g. scheduled stops- etc.) for the purpose of providing information and clarification of proper procedures.
  • Monitors students with special needs (e.g. release to teacher- instructional assistant- parent- etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the student safety. 
  • Assists students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses during normal transport and emergency situations - discharge students only at authorized stops. 
  • Exercise responsible leadership and good judgment when on out-of-district school trips.  
  • Transport only authorized students.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports.
  • Enforce regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
  • Observe and follow all school district policies at all times.
  • Respond to information requests in a cooperative- courteous- and timely manner.
  • Implement and follow all district health and safety policies- including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Cleans assigned vehicles interior for the purpose of ensuring safety- appearance- and sanitation of vehicle - keep turn signals- blinker lights- stop light and windshield clean at all times.
  • Report any mechanical failure or repair needed immediately to USD 409 Bus Mechanic.
  • Report all accidents- regardless of how small- to Director of Transportation.
  • Maintain full control of bus operations at all times.
  • Maintain bus route on the listed time schedule.
  • Responsible to ensure students remain in their seats when bus is in motion- and not move from the seats until the bus comes to a complete stop.
  • Tie down wheelchairs- assist students in wheelchairs on the ramp lift. 
  • Work with parents to help students know and follow rules and regulations for riding on the school bus.
  • Responds to inquiries from students- parents- and staff for the purpose of providing the necessary information regarding transportation services.
  • Prepares written materials (e.g. route sheet; daily log book- discipline reports- maintenance request slips- etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities- providing written reference- conveying information- and complying with established guidelines and regulations.
  • Verifies student eligibility for transport (e.g. checking ID- evaluating health and fitness- reviewing suspension status- etc.) for the purpose of complying with established guidelines for transporting students safely- to and from school.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.

 

Note:  The bus driver position is a part-time position.  Additional assignments may be made available throughout the district to make the bus driver position a full-time position (e.g. daily lunch supervision- custodial assistance- facilities maintenance assistance- etc.).
