TITLE:  Dual Language Coordinator

 

LOCATION: Central Office and Training Center

 

The Kansas City- Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22-000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy- the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

 

With Head Start/preschools- 28 elementary schools- 7 middle schools- and 5 college and career academies/high schools- we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic- 24% African American- 10% White- and 7% Asian. To serve our students- the district employs approximately 4-000 employees including more than 1-600 teachers. 

 

JOB GOAL:

The job of Dual Language Coordinator (all levels) is for the purpose of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibility for providing information and serving as a resource to Dual Language teachers- administrators- and other staff; developing all Dual Language staff to function at high levels as demonstrated by practice and student achievement data; support in the implementation of the district’s instructional model and the District’s Continuous Improvement Plan that results in the achievement of the district’s indicators of success.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates master knowledge of content- pedagogy- and coaching.
  • Provide support- training- mentoring and coaching to dual language teachers- related service providers- paraprofessionals- and administrators.
  • Coaches and supports dual language implementation utilizing data (formative- summative- and standardized measures) that results in the change of instructional practices. Support teachers in the areas of effective instructional practices- reflective thinking- and lesson design connected to data.
  • Uses principles of adult learning and effective facilitation in the planning and implementation of professional development (in-service and classroom embedded).
  • Design and delivery of standards-based professional development (Building and District in-service- embedded- and Professional Learning Communities) in collaboration with the Instructional Coaches and the Director of ESOL.
  • Understands and deploys best practices in the curriculum management process in collaboration with the curriculum department.
  • Demonstrates high levels of proficiency in leadership behaviors and professional deportment.
  • Ability to work a full day in the location or locations assigned.
  • Ability to perform required work and in a fast paced- highly intensive school environment.
  • Collaborate with human resources department and building administration in the recruitment- selection- and retention of dual language teachers. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3-5 years of effective teaching experience preferred as evident by favorable references- portfolio- and evaluations.
  • Experience as an instructional coach as evidenced by student achievement data and other impact data included in a professional portfolio.
  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field (or plan of study on file and active progression to complete degree program) in an agreed upon timeframe.
  • Maintains Kansas Teaching License in appropriate content area and level.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more content areas.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Second Language Acquisition- dual language teaching (Spanish preferred)
  • Demonstrated effective coaching practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to design- and implement effective instruction resulting in students meeting or exceeding standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

 

COMMUNICATION:

Maintains communication with teachers- other school personnel to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.

Maintains confidentiality regarding educational records.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written- oral- diagram- or schedule form.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals- technical procedures- or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports- general curriculum and learning theories- correspondence- and protocols.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators- staff- parents- students- and the general public.

ORGANIZATION:

Maintains a daily log of school/staff visits and documentation.

Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

Performs other related work as required.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students- peers- parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 261 days

SALARY: Based on USD #500 Salary Schedule 

FLSA: EXEMPT

REPORTS TO: Director of ESOL & Migrant Programs
