Title:  Elementary Curriculum Director

Contract/Salary:  12-month contract / Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Reports to:  Superintendent

Supervises:  Office Administrative Assistant/Curriculum Committees

Purpose and Objectives of the Position:  The Elementary Curriculum Director evaluates and provides leadership for curriculum and instruction in the district and is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of Curriculum Initiatives, which include curriculum, instruction, professional development, and assessment for grades pre-K-6 at district elementary schools.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

I.  Instructional Support:

  1. Oversee the design, development and alignment of grades pre-K-6 curricular, instruction, and assessment areas.
  2. Monitor the delivery of the curriculum in district pre-K and elementary classrooms.
  3. Direct instructional and curriculum services to meet students’ needs.
  4. Plan, implement, and evaluate elementary instructional and assessment programs, teachers and principals programs, instructional strategies, and assessment techniques.
  5. Apply research and data to improve the content, sequence, and outcomes of the teaching-learning process.
  6. Collaborate with appropriate administrative and instructional staff to develop, coordinate, maintain, and revise K-12 curriculum documents based on systematic review and analysis.
  7. Involve instructional staff in evaluating and selecting instructional materials to meet student learning needs.
  8. Participate in the district-level decision-making process to establish and review the district’s goals and objectives and major classroom instructional programs of the district.
  9. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to examine curriculum and instruction program effectiveness for elementary schools.
  10. Secure consultants, specialists, and other community resources to assist Principals and instructional staff in attaining objectives.
  11. Provide effective professional development activities that incorporate the mission of the district, program evaluation outcomes, and input from teachers and others.
  12. Direct Federal Title and grant programs.
  13. Coordinate district homeless services
  14. Collaborate with administrative staff on design and delivery of at-risk programs.

II. Policy, Reports, and Law:

  1. Implement the policies established by Federal and State law, the State Board of Education, and local Board policy in curriculum and instruction areas.
  2. Compile, maintain, and present all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents.

III. Budget:                                                                                                                      

  1. Collaborate with the Director of Business and Finance in the design of assigned curriculum and instruction budget.
  2. Compile cost estimates based on documented program needs.

IV. Personnel Management:

  1. Assist with training of personnel and observations relative to effective instruction.
  2. Assist with supervision of instructional coaches relative to effective instruction.

V. Communication:

  1. Provide for two-way communication with principals, teachers, staff, parents, and community.
  2. Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution with administrators, parents, teachers, staff, and community.
  3. Monitor professional research and disseminate ideas and information to other professionals.

VII. Community Relations:

  1. Articulate the district’s mission, instructional philosophy, and curriculum implementation strategies to the community and solicit its support in realizing the district’s mission.
  2. Demonstrate use of appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
  3. Serve as a liaison to business and industry and post-secondary institutions.

Working Conditions:                                                                                                           

  1. Frequent district-wide and other statewide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:                                                                                   

  1. Master’s degree in Education Administration.
  2. Administrative Licensure preferred.
  3. Knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
  4. Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness.
  5. Ability to interpret policy, procedures and data.
  6. Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
  7. Knowledge of testing program and requirements.
  8. Three years experience as a classroom teacher.
  9. Three years experience in instructional leadership roles.
  10. Ability to observe and follow all school district policies at all times.
  11. Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines as assigned.
  12. Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  13. Must verify good health by passing a physical examination, which includes TB and drug test as required.
  14. Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.
  15. Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential.                                                                                      

Terms of Employment:  Twelve (12) month contract.  Salary to be established by the Board.

Evaluation:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the USD 450 Board of Education’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel and this job description.

Shawnee Heights U.S.D. 450 is a Class 5A suburban school district located between the two major population centers of Topeka and Lawrence, Kansas. 

The district has a student population of approximately 3500 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade.  Four elementary schools, a 7/8 middle school and a 9-12 high school comprise the attendance centers of the district.
