Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Pass pre-hire and random drug testing screens.
  • Complete state-required physical examination for bus drivers and Inoculation Certificate on file in the central office.
  • Pass random checks (KBI- DVM).
  • Valid Kansas CDL with required P- S and airbrake endorsements.
  • Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • 5 years’ of experience as a mechanic- including experience working with school buses- gas and diesel engines- hydraulic systems and air brake systems.   
  • Desire to continue career improvement by enhanced skills and job performance.

 

General Functions:

  • Provide clean- safe- and reliable transportation to ensure students benefit from district programs and activities.
  • Ensure all activities conform to state school transportation guidelines.
  • Communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and the community.  
  • React to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner- meeting deadlines as assigned.
  • Operate all vehicles and equipment as necessary.
  • Implement and follow the vision and mission of the district.
  • Participates in unit meetings- in-service training- safety workshops- etc. for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Willingness to submit to random drug screening.
  • Ability to sit- stand- walk- kneel- crouch- squat- stoop- reach- crawl- twist- climb and lift 70 lbs; exposure to cold- heat- noise- outdoors- vibration- confining work space- dust- toxic waste- chemicals- explosive materials- mechanical hazards- and electricalhazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations. 
  • Regular attendance is required of all employees subject to allowed leave in accordance with district policy or negotiated agreement- as appropriate.  Excessive absences or tardiness- unauthorized leave or unexcused absences may result in disciplinary action including termination of employment.
  • Adheres to all USD 409 policies and procedures.  

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Administers shop maintenance processes (e.g. tools- equipment- cleaning- etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of required tools and equipment within a safe work area.
  • Assesses issues (e.g. incidents- complaints- emergency situations- etc.) for the purpose of resolving or recommending solutions.
  • Assists assigned personnel (e.g. mechanics- etc.) for the purpose of providing optimal performances of all scheduled and emergency processes.
  • Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
  • Drives school bus and activity bus as needed for the purpose of transporting passengers over scheduled routes to and from school and field trips.
  • Fabricates inventory items as needed (e.g. parts- tools- etc.) for the purpose of providing and creating items necessary for repairs.
  • Inspects a variety of district vehicles for the purpose of adhering to a preventive maintenance schedule and safety inspection standards and requirements.
  • Obtains quotes (e.g. inventory- contract labor- vendors- etc.) for the purpose of gathering necessary information for decision making.
  • Oversees all mechanic shop processes (e.g. maintenance- road tests- repair- staff training- schedules- inspections- etc.) for the purpose of ensuring completion of daily schedule- maximizing the efficiency of the work force- shift requirements- and ensuring optimal operation of district vehicles.
  • Participates in trainings- meetings- seminars for the purpose of gathering information required for efficient performance.
  • Performs minor body work (e.g. front ends- fenders- bumpers- etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of district vehicles.
  • Prepares a variety of manual and electronic documents- files- and records (e.g. records of repairs- maintenance logs- costs- vehicle warranties- time tracking- etc.) for the purpose of documenting processes and complying with District- State- Federal regulations. 
  • Repairs vehicle systems and components for district vehicles (e.g. diesel engines- differentials- clutches- front/rear ends- brakes- fuel pumps- fuel liens- gauges- electrical wiring- U-joints- etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safe operating condition of district vehicles.
  • Researches a variety of topics (e.g. vendors- tools- equipment- supplies- materials- etc.) for the purpose of gathering information regarding use of district funds and vehicle operation.
  • Responds to road calls regarding disabled vehicles for the purpose of performing emergency repair work in the field and determining appropriate solutions. 
  • Performs other related duties- as assigned- for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
