JOB SUMMARY: 

The position of Marketing and Communications is responsible for building and maintaining the integrity of the USD 506 brand. By working closely with our district stakeholders- the Marketing and Communications coordinator tells the district’s message across many platforms and adopts a robust marketing strategy to make sure our story is heard through digital- social- print- and traditional media campaigns.

This position supports student achievement by ensuring that the District’s public information program is aligned with District goals- and by facilitating the development of accurate and timely internal/external communication and information processes that contribute to and encourage community involvement in the District’s efforts to meet the instructional needs of students.


The position of Marketing and Communications also partners with all of our attendance centers- departments- and communities to produce compelling- brand-centric communications that capture learning to a greater degree. This person will consult with the technology department before and during implementation of any new district programs. This person will work directly with our many departments and buildings as we continue to build communication strategies or more in-depth projects to support our district’s goals of growth in enrollment- retention- and student success.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.

 

  1. Manage the district’s communications calendar.
  2. Create and maintain district websites- social media platforms- etc.
  3. Work closely with Staff and Administrators to know what’s happening around the school district and maintain a strategic presence for USD 506 on all social media channels.
  4. Manage all aspects (writing- editing- collection of content- production oversight) of the District’s Annual Report- the bi-weekly district newsletter- and special publications.
  5. Partner with teachers on classroom/teacher communications to families.
  6. Working with other Administrators- conceive- write and produce marketing materials and manage all print- digital- broadcast- and outdoor marketing.
  7. Working with administration- prepare content and presentation materials for parent meetings- town-hall meetings- and external events.
  8. Oversee all media- publicity- and marketing efforts for the school district.
  9. Develop and maintain the school archive of news items and digital images for use online- in print- and around the district.
  10. Chair the Crisis Communications Team- writing- developing- updating and maintaining- and implementing as needed- procedures and protocol for communicating with Families during a crisis.
  11. Attend and staff key school functions- providing photography and writing and posting any news copy and social media coverage of the event.
  12. Serve as a member of the Administrative Leadership Team and chair of the Marketing Committee.
  13. Collect and analyze data regarding marketing and track resulting student enrollment to best pursue and concentrate appropriate efforts towards such outcomes.
  14. Periodically prepare presentations and report efforts and progress to the Board of Education as needed.
  15. Responsible for coordination and production of all written materials associated with Accreditation.
  16. Bring a strong voice to the Administrative Leadership Team to ensure that program decisions are integrated with the school’s communication strategy.
  17. Write communication policy and procedures for handling sensitive information or media contact.
  18. Plan and manage a budget for advertising- promotions- publicity and website management- and public outreach activities as well as manage contracts for advertising- sponsorships- and other promotional activities.
  19. Research grant and funding opportunities that will help support the communication and public relations goals of the District.
  20. Contact media representatives to initiate articles and news releases about District programs; communicate with media representatives about sensitive or controversial information; create press kits and other media information.
  21. Develop- implement and evaluate comprehensive internal and external district communication plan including- but not limited to- publications- media relations- electronic communications.
  22. Ensure consistent branding and messaging.
  23. Establish and maintain two-way communication systems among schools- offices- departments- and the district and among the district- the media- and the public.
  24. Expedite responses to inquiries and complaints received from citizens- news media- and school personnel.
  25. Organize- assimilate and disseminate facts about Labette County Schools to the public through print and non-print media.
  26. Oversee and edit the writing and production of communication materials.
  27. Provide in-service training as required on public and community relations.
  28. Provide professional assistance in the development of various publications (brochures- newsletters- information bulletins) for schools and departments.
  29. Provide professional public relations counsel and assistance to the administration- School Board- and schools.
  30. Attend work regularly.
  31. Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position may supervise volunteers and student aides. All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully- an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in communications- marketing- public relations- English- OR equivalent concentration or experience- will be considered.
  2. Minimum 3-5 years of experience in communications- marketing- public relations. Experience with Public Education is a plus.
  3. Strong photography- design- writing- and editing skills. Knowledge of specialty programs for design and video production a plus (Photoshop- etc.).
  4. Strong team orientation and ability to work collaboratively with all members of the school community.
  5. Excellent verbal and written communications skills- public speaking and presentation skills- and interpersonal and interview skills.
  6. Strong technology skills for presentation and database use.
  7. Strong time management and organizational skills.
  8. Ability to present information and material to small and large groups. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students- parents- staff- regulatory agencies- or members of the community.
  9. Ability to write reports and correspondence.
  10. Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions while maintaining organization. Proven record of working well in a team environment.
  11. Demonstrated success working collaboratively with community partners.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The employee is regularly required to sit- talk- or hear- frequently required to use repetitive hand motion- handle or feel- and to stand- walk- reach- bend- push- pull and lift up to 20 pounds. Occasionally required to push- pull- and lift up to 30 pounds. The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The employee typically works in an office environment and uses a computer(s)- software- telephone- and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that in an office.

This position will sometimes require significant work in other office areas and locations. Respect for and understanding those various work environments is necessary. Work may involve travel for training and meetings from time to time. The employee may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the workday.

Labette County USD 506 encompasses 500 square miles of Labette County. The district serves over 1,600 students enrolled in a K-12 system, which is housed in five kindergarten through eighth grade elementary schools and one comprehensive high school serving grades nine through twelve.  Administrative offices are located in the Curran Administrative Center, Altamont, KS.  The district is a member of the Southeast Kansas Education Service Center and of the Southeast Kansas Interlocal #637. Communities served by the district are Altamont, Angola, Bartlett, Dennis, Edna, Valeda, Labette, Mound Valley, and a large portion of the west side of Parsons. Cities in the immediate area include Parsons, Coffeyville, and Independence. Larger cities nearby include Pittsburg, KS, Joplin, MO, and Bartlesville, OK. Agriculture and agriculture-related business are primary sources of income in the district. The communities in the district are served by three area hospitals. Recreation is readily accessible through area golf courses, Big Hill Lake, and Lake Parsons.
