Special Education teachers in Kansas are required to have a special education endorsement.  If you are not already endorsed, you may qualify to work on a waiver while pursuing your endorsement.  The district provides tuition reimbursement options to assist teachers in obtaining their endorsement.  

 

Purpose Statement

The Instructional Support Teacher works with students with mild to moderate disabilities.  The focus is on facilitating student success in general education academic areas; supervising special education students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress. 

 

Support for Teachers

Maize offers all teachers new to the district a professional mentor to help them through the first two years.  Our special education teachers are also assisted by a team of coaches dedicated to ensuring the teacher`s success.  We also allow our our IEP case managers time away from the classroom to work on IEPs and the documentation that comes with the job.  

 

Essential Functions 

  1. Administers a variety of assessment-related activities (e.g. developmental testing programs, subject specific assessments, etc.) for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and developing individual learning plans. 
  2. Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, and administration. 
  3. Collaborates with parents, instructional staff, other school personnel for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes and achieving student educational plan objectives. 
  4. Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and subject-specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that address individual student requirements. 
  5. Differentiates classroom work (e.g. instructional methods, materials, etc.) for the purpose of providing students with instruction that address individualized learning plans. 
  6. Communicates expectations, student`s achievements and students progress to develop methods for improvement, and reinforce classroom goals in the home environment. 
  7. Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study. 
  8. Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual records (e.g. assessments, IEPs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and providing reliable information. 
  9. Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment. 
  10. Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. IEPs, general education intervention meetings, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions. 
  11. Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs, progress reports, exit plans, data sheets, lesson plans, evaluations, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements. 
  12. Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, bullying, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to the law and school policies as a mandated reporter. 
  13. Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. teachers, parents, administrators, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information, and direction. 
  14. Serves as a student case manager for the purpose of ensuring each student is receiving services and all IEPs are in compliance. 
  15. Supports classroom teachers for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of established curriculum and individual student plans. 
  16. Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Education, Certification

Bachelors and/or Masters degree in job related area 

KSDE Approved Licensure

 

 

Physical Demands, Working Environment

This position generally requires occasional lifting and carrying up to twenty (20) pounds, some pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 20% walking, and 60% standing. 

 

Attendance

All employees are expected to maintain satisfactory attendance and report to work on time every

day.  Frequent unscheduled absences, including late arrivals and early departures, are grounds for

discipline, up to and including discharge.

Benefits Information

$50,000 Life Insurance Policy. For Health Insurance, if choose the District Health Insurance the District pays $380.00 per month towards the Health Insurance Premium for single coverage. $470.00 per month towards the Health Insurance Premium for single + spouse or child coverage. $570.00 per month towards the Health Insurance Premium for single + family coverage

The district offers a base salary of $46,050 or based on experience/credentials and contributes $380 per month toward district provided health insurance.
