QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Bachelor's degree in Education from four-year college or university
                                2. Valid Kansas State Certification in grade level or content area assigned
                                3. Valid Kansas State Certification in ESL (K-12)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Teaching experience with students that need ELL services

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services

JOB GOAL:
Teaches content subject aligned to state and national standards outlined by Newton USD 373 guaranteed and viable curriculum. Proactively seeks to identify and screen possible English Learners, and collaborates with all staff members to ensure English Language Development instruction and support is provided within all subject areas.

Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Facilitates learning and instruction by using multiple presentation methods: demonstrating, modeling, visual representations, and strategies that aid in supplementing and engaging students content.
  2. Collaborates with teachers and ELL Coordinator to adapt and scaffold materials, assignments and assessments to improve second language acquisition using Kansas ELL standards, Newton USD 373 curriculum, and state standards.
  3. Administers assessments to evaluate the progress and results, and issues reports to inform all stakeholders of student progress.
  4. Keeps and maintains in SIS: grades, progress, attendance, lesson plans, student records, discipline information, parent contact log, as needed or required.
  5. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and meets the needs of students.
  6. Maintains a positive classroom environment conducive to learning.
  7. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  8. Ensures communication and translation/interpretation for stakeholders (parents/guardians) in their native language when possible.
  9. Participates in multiple meeting types: faculty, professional meetings, educational conferences, professional learning and workshops.
  10. Creates and maintains daily schedules to meet the needs of ELL students and support ESOL Instructional Aides to ensure coverage.
  11. Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  12. Ability to use technology as an instructional tool.
  13. Maintain a high level of confidentiality regarding student and staff information in order to remain in compliance with legal requirements and to maintain a professional work environment.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the board of education.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the boards policy on evaluation of professional personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
  * Ability to meet and instruct assigned classes in the designated locations
  * Ability to create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students
  * Ability to assess the accomplishments of students and provide progress reports as required
  * Ability to govern student conduct and maintain order in the classroom in a fair manner
