Qualifications:                       

*Licensure in one or more areas of Endorsement as Supervisor—District Leadership, Director of Special Education, Building Leadership.
*Strong interpersonal and communication skills
*Master’s Degree
*Knowledge of current trends in education
*Familiarity with regulations governing special education
*Understanding of curriculum and instruction and educational standards

BASIC FUNCTION/PURPOSE
            To perform designated administrative and supervisory duties to insure effective support and operation of special education services in USD 475.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

            The employee performing the duties of this position is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, hear, bend, stoop, and reach.  The employee may be occasionally required to manually lift, move, or carry up to 50 pounds.  The employee is required to interact with staff and meet the demands of several different people.  The employee is responsible for the work output of others.  The employee occasionally works extended hours.  Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
The assistant shall have responsibility for supervision as follows:

 

  • Assist in the evaluation of special education programs and staff.

 
A.  Coordinate Staff Development

  1. Plan and coordinate staff development activities designed to encourage collaboration between general education and special education.
  2. Orient new staff regarding the philosophy, goals, priorities, and programming procedures for special education, and each employee`s responsibility within the district.
  3. Work with building principals, general, and special education staff members to ensure that general education interventions systems are operational in each building.
  4. Develop and maintain a knowledge base of regular education assessment, curriculum, and instruction, and anticipate the potential impact on special education.
  5. Develop and provide mandated and ongoing training and professional development for para-professionals.
  6. Plan and coordinate ongoing professional development for special education staff including creating a calendar for annual PD and scheduling presenters.

 
B.  Monitoring Compliance

  1. Responsible for the implementation of program compliance with Federal and State rules and regulations.
  2. Maintain adequate records for completing required reports for all state and federal agencies.
  3. Keep informed of all legal requirements governing special education.
  4. Provide appropriate guidance, consultation, and coordinate support to facilitate the IEP process district-wide.
  5. Attend IEP meetings as necessary for resolving conflicts, insuring consistency of student placement, observation of staff performance, and general process oversight.

 
C.  Coordinate activities of selected departments
1.      Resolve and manage conflict, and react quickly and positively to suggestions and criticisms from other departments within the educational organization.
2.      Arrange for transportation for each student to and from the program on a schedule that is equitable to regular education as well as serve as liaison for district transportation.
3.      Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with regular education administrators and teachers.
4.      Coordinate special education services within the district boundaries for private schools and serve as LEA representative for IEP meetings.
5.      Coordinate district Gifted education services. 
6.      Coordinate and oversee district-wide Extended School Year services.
7.      Coordinate VI/HI district services and serve as liaison with KSD/KSB.
8.      Attend and contribute at district-level meetings which involve special education and related services.
 
D.  Assist in communication and integration between regular and special education
1.      Assist the director in maintaining and improving communication with community agencies such as:
a.       DCF/JJA
b.       Court Services
c.       Mental Health Agencies
d.       Exceptional Family Member Program
2.      Assist with the monitoring of special and general education classes that serve children with special instructional needs.
3.      Assist general and special education teachers in locating instructional materials and equipment to meet the unique needs of each student.
4.      Work with special and general education teachers jointly and individually to program for students based upon their unique instructional and behavioral needs.
5.      Encourage the participation of students with disabilities in all school programs and activities.
E.  Provide parent support
1.      Serve as an advocate for parents and students to assure that special programming is provided for each child in the least restrictive environment.
2.      Provide support to parents of students with disabilities as needed.
F.  Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Special Education.
 
Term of Employment:                12 months
 
Salary Range:                             Commensurate with qualifications and experience
 
Evaluation Frequency:               Job performance will be evaluated a minimum of 1 time per year.
