Council Grove Junior Senior High School and Prairie Heights Elementary are seeking applicants to fill a counselor position for the 2024-2025 school year. Location:                   Council Grove Junior Senior High School and                                      Prairie Heights Elementary

Status:                        Full time.  Time in each building to be                                                  determined yearly by administration.           

Responsible to:        Principal of each building

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Master's Degree in School Counseling or Social Work
  2. Valid Kansas teaching license on file with district office

Physical Requirements:

  1. Maintain emotional control under stress
  2. Be physically capable of carrying out Emergency Safety           Intervention (ESI) protocols.

Job Duties:

  1. Social Emotional Behavior
    1. Teach PHES developmental guidance curriculum consistent with the district's guidance program plan and tailored to campus needs. (Second Step)
    2. Assist teachers in the examination of BSEL data
    3. Counsel individual students and small groups with presenting needs and concerns after examining data.
    4. Document focus and progress on the BSEL Tracking form or other form used by each building.
    5. Assist staff during times of student crisis.  Examples to include but not limited to:

Monitoring safe room for Tap-Outs

Taking students for breaks

Covering classrooms for teachers to have breaks

  1. Consultation
    1. Consult parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
    2. Work with school and community personnel to bring together resources for students.
    3. Maintain a communication system that effectively collects and disseminates information to other professionals as appropriate, while maintaining confidentiality.
    4. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other school professionals and representatives of community resources.
    5. Use an effective referral process to assist students and others to use special programs and services
  2. Assessment
    1. Serve as CGJSHS School Testing Coordinator in planning and administration of ACT standardized testing program (Pre-ACT, ACT, WorkKeys)
    2. Interpret tests and other appraisal results appropriately and communicate to school personnel, students, and their parents.
    3. Maintain the confidentiality of student assessment
  3. Career Education
    1. Plan the career education program for PHES (grade 6) and CGJH (grades 7-8) to ensure that it meets identified needs, priorities, and program objectives. This includes experiences for all students at the Junior High.
    2. Guide individuals and groups of students to develop education plans and career awareness through the use of Xello at grades 6 and 7.
    3. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the guidance program and individual activities and make changes based on findings.
    4. Educate the school staff, parents, and community about the guidance program through a public information program.
    5. Compile, maintain, and file all required physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents.
  4. Professional
    1. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
    2. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
    3. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
    4. Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
    5. Adhere to ethical and legal standards and model behavior that is professional, and responsible.
    6. Participate in committee assignment(s) and professional development to serve the profession and improve skills related to job assignment.  (DLT, MDT, PLC, MTSS Data days.)
    7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Information

Salary is based on the negotiated agreement and determined by educational level and years of experience. Base salary for a beginning teacher with no experience is $42,000 for the 2023-2024 school year and negotiations are being held for the 2024-2025 salaries.

Unified School District 417 is located in east-central Kansas in the beautiful Flint Hills region. Our district includes portions of Geary, Wabaunsee, Lyon, and Morris Counties, and is only 30 minutes from both Manhattan and Emporia. It is comprised of two elementary schools and Council Grove Junior Senior High School (3A). The district has an average enrollment of 770 students.
