Counselor – Elementary School

 

Job Summary:

The Elementary School Counselor helps students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment.   To coordinate a comprehensive counseling program with the district efforts, the Elementary Counselor must work closely with the building staff, the student support department and the district administration.

 

Essential Performance Responsibilities

  1. Help students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment.
  2. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the
  3. needs and abilities of students.
  4. Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
  5. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  6. Work effectively with community organizations.
  7. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  8. Assists with registration and orientation for new students
  9. Assists with the school district’s dropout prevention efforts
  10. Serves as a ready resource to students to provide counseling that will lead each individual to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity
  11. Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensure effective communication with students and parents
  12. Coordinates with outside agencies to bring opportunities to students
  13. Provides Character Education lessons as requested
  14. Provides crisis interventions to individuals or small groups
  15. Assists School Social Workers

 

General Responsibilities

  1. Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively
  2. personal, social, academic, career, and family concerns.
  3. Implement a comprehensive appraisal process by: selecting and administering appropriate ability, achievement, and interests tests; visiting with students and interview interested adults, and; interpreting results to students, teacher, administrators, and parents.
  4. Update and maintain confidential student records, including cumulative transcripts and
  5. student files.
  6. Identify students with special needs and make appropriate recommendations and
  7. referrals.
  8. Implement an effective program of educational and career planning.
  9. Schedule opportunities for students to visit with resource persons about academic and
  10. career choices.
  11. Maintain a current library of career information, and assist students in using the
  12. information, and assist students in using the information effectively.
  13. Assist with enrollment and kindergarten round-up.
  14. Assist in a continuous program of student orientation.
  15. Assist in making recommendations for school curriculum and instructional practices.
  16. Assist with the activities of student organizations.
  17. Attend and assist when necessary with school events such as musical programs, athletics, student recognition ceremonies, graduation, and open house.
  18. See that district policies are observed during all activities.
  19. Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
  20. Obtain advance approval of the Principal for all activities and expenditures.
  21. Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  22. Other duties as assigned by the Principal, or other Administrative Staff.

 

Additional Duties

  1. Support the value of education.
  2. Support the philosophy and vision of U.S.D. #230.
  3. Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

 

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of pre/post high school program eligibility & NCAA requirements
  2. Knowledge of college/university admissions processes, scholarship programs and other educational opportunities.
  3. Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis
  4. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students
  5. Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed
  6. Ability to organize and coordinate work
  7. Ability to communicate effective with students and parents
  8. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth
  9. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

 

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  1. Works in standard office and school building environments.
  2. Must work in noisy and/or crowded environments.
  3. Must work mostly indoors and outdoors year-round.


Qualifications Profile

  1. KSDE License in School Counseling
  2. Master`s Degree from an accredited college or university required
  3. TB Skin Test/Physical completed and on file.
  4. Ability to pass a background check
  5. Valid driver’s license or state issued ID

 

Experience

Successful prior teaching/counseling experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.

Pay Rate:       Follows the District Licensed Salary Schedule

 

Benefits:         Follows the District Licensed Benefit Package

Benefits Information

District pays the employer rates for a dependent or single plan in the Kansas State Employee Health Plan. There are five (5) different medical plans to choose from and two different providers. Medical, dental and vision plans are all available. District also pays for a $25,000 life insurance policy as part of the benefit package. Ten (10) sick leave days and three (3) personal days are available each year. Professional Development opportunities are numerous and available for both growth and movement on the salary schedule.

Salary Information

Placement on the USD 445 licensed salary schedule based on experience and education level. Starting pay for MS Degree on the salary schedule is currently $46,350. Experience, college credits and professional development points (from USD 445) are utilized in column movement on the salary schedule. This does not include any possible supplemental pay that might be considered. If you are interested in supplemental positions, the salary would be in addition to what is your base salary amount.

SCHOOLS

Coffeyville Unified School District #445 has a diverse student population comprised of six attendance centers:

  • Field Kindley High School is a 9-12 center with approximately 500 students.
  • Roosevelt Middle School is a 7-8 center with approximately 250 students.
  • Community Elementary is a K-6 center with about 900 students.
  • Dr. Jerry Hamm Early Childhood Learning Center is our birth to four- year old center.

INSTRUCTION

USD 445 employs six instructional coaches district wide to assist teachers in everything from Literacy First strategies, technology integration, and in the latest in teaching and learning strategies.

TECHNOLOGY

Coffeyville USD 445 operates a large technology budget and incorporates the latest technology in the classroom, including eno boards, projectors in every room, IP phone system, and four computer labs. All teachers are issued  a laptop for use in their classrooms. Laptops are 1:1 for all middle school and high school students.
