Title:  Elementary Principal

 

Reports to:  Superintendent of Schools and/or designee

 

Position Summary:   By use of leadership- supervisory- and administrative skills- manage assigned school so as to promote the educational development of each student.

 

Supervises:

1. All certified- classified- and other personnel assigned to the building.

  1. Other resource and service personnel while functioning in the building.

 

Qualifications:

Required:

  1. A Master`s degree with a major in education.
  2. A valid Kansas certificate in school administration.
  3. At least three years of teaching experience.
  4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

Preferred:

  1. A minimum of two years` experience in school administration is preferred.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

 

  1. General

 

  1. Assumes responsibility for the observance and enforcement of the operating policies of the Board of Education.
  2. Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports- records- and all other paperwork required or appropriate for the school`s administration.
  3. Keeps the office of the Superintendent of Schools completely and continually informed in matters related to the conditions and operations of the learning center.
  4. Cooperates with the central administrative staff in matters pertaining to the operation of the learning center.
  5. Assumes responsibility for the administration of the learning center and the supervision of its staff and students.
  6. Oversees the attendance- conduct- and health of the students.
  7. Serves- as directed by the Superintendent of Schools- as a member of relevant committees and attends meetings as appropriate.
  8. Serves as an ex officio member of all committees and councils within the learning center.
  9. Attends activities sponsored by the learning center.
  10. Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assume appropriate duties in the absence of the principal.
  11. Develops and maintains a personal plan for his/her own professional growth.
  12. Assumes responsibility for the development of staff and student handbooks.
  13. Attends meetings of the Board of Education as requested.
  14. Attends all administrative team meetings.
  15. Prepares a calendar of school events.
  16. Serves as a member of the building`s School Improvement Team.
  17. Organizes and coordinates all aspects of the KESA process for the respective learning center.
  18. Performs tasks and assumes responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.

 

  1. Educational Program

 

  1. Assumes responsibility for assisting in the development of the curriculum to meet state requirements and to fulfill the needs of the students.
  2. Assumes responsibility for the procurement of materials necessary for the operation of the school- including supplies- textbooks- and equipment.
  3. Initiates- designs- or implements programs to meet the specific needs of the school or students.
  4. Monitors the development- execution- and appropriateness of the educational program.
  5. Assumes responsibility for schedule-making within the school- subject to the general schedules and regulations of the Superintendent and the Board of Education.
  6. Makes frequent classroom visits for the purpose of supervision of instruction.
  7. Assumes responsibility for the administration and supervision of the school`s testing program.
  8. Keeps abreast of trends- developments- and research as they pertain to education- school improvement- and the operation of schools.

 

III. Students

 

  1. Assumes responsibility for the enrollment of students.
  2. Assumes responsibility for the classification- promotion- and retention of students within the building.
  3. Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the learning center.
  4. Assumes responsibility for the discipline in the learning center.
  5. Establishes rules for providing good order in the buildings and on the grounds.
  6. Maintains high standards of student conduct- and enforces discipline as necessary- in accordance with the due process rights of students and within the guidelines of Board of Education policy.
  7. Assumes responsibility for the health and safety of students and conducts crisis- fire and tornado drills in conformity with the regulations of the state fire marshal.
  8. Notifies parents/guardians and/or obtains medical care in the event of serious injury or illness of a student.
  9. Provides for the management and supervision of the lunch program.
  10. Informs the Superintendent of parent requests to transfer a student to another school or district.
  11. Monitors and reports student achievement.

 

  1. Personnel

 

  1. Assumes responsibility for the assignment of the teaching staff within the building.
  2. Assists substitute teachers in the event of the absence of a classroom teacher.
  3. Demonstrates responsibility for his/her own professional growth and development through participation in professional organizations and staff development opportunities.
  4. Assigns and evaluates the professional staff of the learning center.
  5. Provides orientation for newly assigned staff and assists in their development.
  6. Conducts meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.
  7. Assists in the professional development and training of teachers.
  8. Surveys staff needs and recommends staff changes.
  9. Implements and enforces the negotiated agreements between the Board and the Association of Basehor-Linwood Educators.
  10. Recommends staff leaves of absence- suspensions- dismissals- and tenure status of employees.
  11. Assumes responsibility for the assignment and supervision of student teachers and practicum students.



  1. Fiscal Management

 

  1. Assumes responsibility for the administration of the textbook rental program within the building.
  2. Has authorization to collect compensation from the parents/guardians of any pupil who willfully destroys or damages school property.
  3. Reviews requisitions of teachers and submits requisitions for items needed in the building.
  4. Makes an accurate accounting of all funds handled in connection with the school programs.



  1. Facilities

 

  1. Assists the Director of Maintenance in the evaluation of the building custodians.
  2. Conducts- with the Director of Maintenance and head custodian- periodic building safety inspections.
  3. Supervises the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and non-academic activities.
  4. Assumes responsibility for the safety and administration of the school plant.
  5. Provides and maintains adequate inventories- maintenance- and security for the school property.



VII. Public Relations

 

  1. Assumes responsibility for maintaining good public relations and for utilizing community resources to enrich the learning program.
  2. Constantly seeks to communicate and cooperate with parents/guardians regarding student welfare.
  3. Encourages and promotes active- open communication between the school and home/community.
  4. Assists the Board and district administration with the interpretation of the district`s program to the community.



Physical Requirements:  Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in the work environment. Regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job is required.

 

  1.   Must have physical stamina to maintain job responsibilities.
    2. Requires occasional stooping- bending- kneeling- reaching- and turning.

Term of Employment: 

 

  1. Be on duty from approximately July 22 through June 4th. 
  2. Have an initial contract of one (1) year- from July through June (with exact dates to be determined by the Board- relative to the school calendar).  Subsequent contracts may be for one (1) or two (2) years- at the Board`s discretion.



Evaluation:  Performance effectiveness will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of Kansas Statutes and Board of Education Policy.

Basehor-Linwood Unified School District 458 serves students and families in a 90 square mile area of southern Leavenworth County, Kansas. We currently have 8 district attendance centers. Our Early Learning Center for Childcare and Pre-K opened for the 2020-21 school year in August. K-5 buildings are located in Bonner Springs, Basehor and the Glenwood Ridge subdivision. A new K-5 building, located in Basehor, opened in the Fall 2021. Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 attend Basehor-Linwood Middle School in Basehor, near the center of the district. Basehor-Linwood High School, located in Basehor, is a 5A school, serving students in grades 9 through 12. 

 

BLHS was named a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School. In addition, the district operates Basehor-Linwood Virtual School, an internet-based school serving approximately 250 K-12 students statewide instructed by Basehor-Linwood teachers.

 

Special Education services are provided by the Tonganoxie/Basehor-Linwood Special Education Cooperative located in Basehor.
