Purpose and Objectives of the Position:  The purpose of the Social Worker (School Liaison) is facilitating the implementation of a school-based behavioral health model. The liaison will be a pivotal member of the school behavioral health team that works collaboratively to address the needs of students in the foster care system, as well other students identified as needing additional behavioral health support. The work of the liaison may extend beyond the school setting to include community and residential settings. They will be responsible for coordinating between USD 450, student, family and the Mental Health Provider. 

Qualifications:  Master of Social Work degree.  Current and valid Kansas Social Work License issued by the State of Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board at the LMSW level.  Graduate Social Work Practicum in school setting, and graduate level School Social Work course.

 Essential Job Functions:

  1. Serves as the primary liaison to Mental Health Provider (MHP), family caregivers, child welfare agencies and school administration.
  2. Collaborates with school administrators and MHP to establish a school-based behavioral health team model.
  3. Assists the behavioral health team in implementing data-based screening and referral protocols to ensure timely access to school based and/or MHP.
  4. Assesses student and family needs for the purpose of developing and implementing behavioral health support plans.
  5. Provides quality assurance in the referral process to MHP.
  6. Assists students and families with accessing and navigating MHP and other community-based resources and services.
  7. Maintains accurate records for the purpose of progress monitoring and complying with district and state reporting requirements.
  8. Provides consultation to USD administration and counseling staff on interventions for students experiencing behavioral and emotional barriers to learning.
  9. Assists USD administrators with the development of student safety and re-entry plans.
  10. Ensures that school-based interventions and services are trauma informed, culturally and linguistically appropriate.
  11. Provides professional development and coaching to administrators, teachers and counselors on trauma informed and culturally responsive services and supports within the behavioral health model.
  12. Provides support in crisis response.
  13. Trains and supervises behavioral/mental health interns to provide effective services and supports.
  14. Participates in USD in-service and professional development meetings.
  15. Conducts classroom observations of students for the purpose of data collections and fidelity of implementation of the treatment plans.
  16. Attends team meetings to participate in the problem-solving model for students and families.
  17. Works within the MTSS framework to facilitate pre-screening; consult with teachers and staff and provides services to alleviate issues impairing a student’s ability to be successful in the regular classroom.
  18. Provides direct services and check-up supports to students on caseload assigned from reassignment hearings.
  19. Completes accident/incident reports for students/staff.
  20. Compiles data for statistical purposes.
  21. Maintains confidentiality regarding educational records.
  22. Maintains a daily log of school/staff visits and documentation.
  23. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.
  24. Works with district staff to identify and support students in foster system, CINC, and other family support programs
  25. Encourage families to continue summer services, assists in establishing schedule and location for summer services

 

Working Conditions:

  1. Requires district-wide travel to multiple building locations as assigned.

                                                                                                                       

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:                                                                                               

  1. Valid Kansas license as a Licensed School Social Worker at the LMSW level.
  2. Knowledge of procedures for assessing achievement and intellectual, emotional, and behavioral functioning for educational purposes.
  3. Social work experience in K-12 settings preferred.
  4. Experience leading professional development and training with teachers and counselors.
  5. Flexible, solutions oriented, collaborative and responsive to crisis situations.
  6. Possess and utilize excellent interpersonal skills and professional judgment
  7. Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies, including behavior management interventions.
  8. Strong consultation skills for conferencing with teachers, parents, and students.
  9. Excellent organizational, and communication skills.
  10. Knowledge of computers (desktops/laptops), copy machines, fax machines and other office equipment.
  11. Ability to observe and follow all school district policies at all times.
  12. Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines as assigned while maintaining emotional control under stress
  13. Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  14. Must verify good health by passing a physical examination that includes TB and drug test as required.
  15. Other duties as assigned by the principal/Director of Special Education.
  16. Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.
  17. Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential.

Terms of Employment:  Salary to be established by the board.

Evaluation:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the USD 450 Board of Education’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel and this job description.

Shawnee Heights U.S.D. 450 is a Class 5A suburban school district located between the two major population centers of Topeka and Lawrence, Kansas.
