Job Description:

Reports to: Superintendent

Supervises: Bus Drivers, Bus Aides, Bus Office Manager

Purpose and Objectives of the Position: The Transportation Director will coordinate bus drivers assignments, schedules, routes, and activity trips and vehicles to provide safe and efficient pupil transportation services.

Essential Job Functions:

         Maintains vehicle/bus fleet in working order with basic mechanic skills. Conduct periodic checks for efficiency of services and employee productivity.

         Preparation of special education bus routes; assures route descriptions and student data are current

         Preparation of regular bus routes; and assures route descriptions are current

         Keep accurate and current records of route mileage.

         High frequency of telephone use: addressing parental concerns; route related questions; communicating with building administrators.

         Maintain accurate and complete boundary maps.

         Ability to react to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines as assigned.

         Conforms with and knows all State laws, regulations, and district policies regarding school transportation for regular and special education.

         Provide for driver training as required to meet State requirements.

         Plan and present the monthly Drivers Safety Meetings as required by State law.

         Supervises the districts drug and alcohol testing for drivers.

         Checks roads in inclement weather and advises superintendent.

         Works closely with and is in attendance during annual inspections made by the Kansas Highway Patrol inspector.

         Completes state and local forms and reports as required.

         Maintains safety standards in conformance with state insurance regulations and develops a program of preventive safety.

         Recruits, trains, and supervises all transportation personnel, and makes recommendations on their employment, transfer, promotion, and release.

         Help prepare specifications for the lease or purchase of buses.

Miscellaneous Additional Duties:

         Availability to fulfill the duties of a bus driver upon necessity.

         Assist with new driver training and remedial training of current employees.

         Provide instruction during periodic in-service and training meetings.

         Perform periodic driver performance evaluations.

         Organize and conduct the interviews and hiring process of applicants for bus positions.

         Keep maintenance records.

         Participate in investigative interrogatories with law enforcement officials.

         Participate in accident reporting and investigation.

         Be on-call to address and handle off-hour emergencies.

         Completes and dispatches insurance reports.

Student Management:

         Handle school bus safety referrals in cooperation with the Administrators.

         Provide corrective interaction when necessary.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

         Requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, or driving.

         Requires driving skills, which include turning and reaching, and the ability to operate a vehicle at night.

         Occasional exposure to various outdoor elements when investigating accidents or other responsibilities which would involve exposure to outdoor elements year-round.

         Must have ability to remain focused under stressful situations which could include severe student misconduct, lost or misplaced students, dissatisfied parents, mechanical emergencies, etc.

         Must work in a noisy, crowded, stressful environment, with numerous interruptions.

         Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

         High School diploma or equivalent.

         Acceptable report from criminal history inquiry; acceptable driving record and acceptable to insurance underwriter; pass bus driver physical exam and pre-employment, random, and/or reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol screening.

         CDL license with proper endorsements.

         Defensive Driving and First Aid Certification.

         Three (3) years experience, or five (5) years related experience preferred.

         Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

         Capable of multi-tasking.

         Experience operating office equipment, computers, district software, and driving all types of school buses.

         Ability to observe and follow all school district policies at all times.

         Ability to implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.

          Must verify good health by passing a physical examination the includes TB and drug test as required.

         Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.

         Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential.

         Maintain good community relations and a positive rapport with those you supervise and those you work with.

         Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Terms of Employment:

         At will and Exempt Position. Salary to be determined.

Cheney USD 268 is a rural district located 20 miles west of Wichita and 2 miles south of Highway 54. We are also located 7 miles south of Cheney Reservoir, a popular state park in this area. The City of Cheney is a community of roughly 2100 people. We are a 3A school district consisting of 3 attendance centers; Cheney Elementary School (PreK-5th Grade), Cheney Middle School (6-8th Grade) and Cheney High School (9-12th Grade), with a total enrollment of between 780 and 825 students. The community of Cheney recently passed a $15 million bond which we used to install a security system to each building, added on several new classrooms to accommodate new courses, added a baseball field for our growing baseball/softball teams and renovated our football field & bleachers. We`ve implemented a College Career Ready program which has been a huge success. We offer a wide variety of athletics, fine arts, and activities. We have a very progressive and supporting community, which has all the basic amenities;  Local grocery store, hardware store, several restaurants, banking, post office, medical clinic, fitness centers, hair/tanning salons, excellent recreation program, a beautiful eighteen-hole golf course, historical museum, and steady growth in new homes. We are the home of the Sedgwick County Fair each year.
